Kimberly-Clark Issues Recall of Tampons Because of Bacterium

Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Kotex Natural Balance Security tampons, issued a recall after it was discovered that the raw materials used to make the product was contaminated with bacterium, enterobacter sakazakii. The recall impacts only the unscented, regular absorbency tampons with carton codes 15063 (18 count) and 15068 (36 count). According to reports, the bacterium in the product may cause health risks, including vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, or infections that can even be life threatening. Women with serious existing illnesses, cancer, or immune-compromised conditions, such as HIV, can be at an increased risk. Consumers have been instructed to call a doctor immediately if they have used the subject tampons and experience unusual vaginal discharge, rash, fever, headache, vomiting, or abdominal pains, particularly if they are HIV positive, have AIDS, cancer, an existing serious illness, or may be pregnant.
