Medical device company, Covidien PLC, announced that one of its products has been connected with the deaths of 3 patients who had undergone chest surgery. According to reports, the company has concluded that DUET TRS has the potential to injure adjacent anatomical structures within the thorax, which may result in life-threatening, post-operative complications. The Covidien tissue reinforcement product, which is applied to a patient at the same time as medical staples, should no longer be used in chest surgeries. According to reports, the product has also led to reports of 13 serious injuries.
